چکیده

[1] Reanalysis of the Apollo 15 A, B, and C green glass beads from slide 15426,72, led to the discovery of patchy, highly vesicular glass rims adhering to beads. These rims are high in S and Ni and low in MgO, but otherwise compositionally similar to the green glasses. We find that these rims represent a unique melt composition that places constraints on lunar magmatic processes. Combining the compositional data for the vesicular glass rims with new minor element data for the green glass beads leads us to hypothesize that the vesicular rim fluid originated near the green glass source, at about 2.2 GPa. These findings support the theory of a heterogeneous lunar mantle, and suggest that sulfur did not drive the eruption from depth, but that degassing volatiles into the vacuum did drive the final fire fountain eruption.

The Search for Water in Igneous Lunar Materials: a Re-assessment of the Lunar Magmatic Volatile Budget

Introduction: Magmatic volatiles such as H 2 O, F, Cl, CO 2 , and S play a critical role in physiochemical processes that control thermal stabilities of minerals and melts, magma eruptive processes, and transport of economically important metals. Of these volatiles, water is the dominant magmatic volatile in terrestrial magmas both because of its abundance and its strong effect on physical prop...

Magmatic Processes That Produced Lunar Fire Fountains: Evidence from Vesicular Rims on Picritic Glass Beads

Introduction: The standing hypothesis for the formation of the lunar picritic glass beads is eruption in a volatile-driven fire fountain followed by degassing while suspended in a hot, turbulent vapor plume. Reanalysis of the Apollo 15 A, B, and C green glass beads from slide 15426,72, led to the discovery of beads with small patches of highly vesicular green glass adhering to their rims (fig. ...

The Second Conference on the Lunar Highlands Crust and New Directions

Many studies exist on magmatic volatiles (H, C, N, F, S, Cl) in and on the Moon, within the last several years, that have cast into question the post-Apollo view of lunar formation, the distribution and sources of volatiles in the Earth-Moon system, and the thermal and magmatic evolution of the Moon. However, these recent observations are not the first data on lunar volatiles. When Apollo sampl...

Lunar floor-fractured craters: Classification, distribution, origin and implications for magmatism and shallow crustal structure

[1] Floor-Fractured Craters (FFCs) are a class of lunar craters characterized by anomalously shallow floors cut by radial, concentric, and/or polygonal fractures; additional interior features are moats, ridges, and patches of mare material. Two formation mechanisms have been hypothesized—floor uplift in response to shallow magmatic intrusion and sill formation, and floor shallowing in response ...

The Effect of Evolving Gas Distribution on Shallow Lunar Magmatic Intrusion Density: Implications for Gravity Anomalies

Introduction: The GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory [1]) mission has enabled unprecedented views of the lunar crust and interior structure. Indeed, the data solutions now resolve gravity anomalies arising from lateral heterogeneities within the crust globally at scales < 10 km[2,3]. Intrusive magmatic features such as dikes and sills are predicted to be prevalent within the lunar ...
